The government’s refusal to release updated allowances for senior members of public universities and its disregard for its commitments under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) are the reasons behind this strike action.
Following a directive from the Ministry of Finance in May 2024, TUSAAG expressed anger in an official statement about the government’s persistent contempt for agreements made in July 2024.
The association noted that the failure to honor these commitments constitutes a violation of their rights and highlights the government’s lack of attention to their concerns.
“The Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) hereby declares a nationwide strike action effective tomorrow, 27th September 2024, in response to the government’s disregard for obligations under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and failure to implement the revised allowances for senior members of public universities,” portions of the statement read.
It added that “we have exhausted all options for discussion. The continued inaction is not only unacceptable but also a clear breach of the CBA.”
In addition, the group charged that the government was discriminating against TUSAAG members by paying common allowances to other unions at public institutions.
The group listed several expectations, among them the prompt payment of prearranged allowances for things like car upkeep, off-campus living expenses, gasoline, utilities, and sanitation/security costs. In addition, they demanded a formal admission of their complaints and a pledge to strictly adhere to the CBA’s provisions.
In their declaration, TUSAAG stated, “Effective tomorrow, we will withdraw all services across all technical universities in Ghana until our demands are met.”
