John Mahama made the assurance during a stakeholder engagement with the creative sector on Friday May 7. The former President highlighted what his government did in the past to support the sector and promised to do more when elected as President again.
According to him, all the good plans put in place for the creative sector came to a halt after his party lost the elections. He has promised to work hand in hand with the stakeholders in the creative sector to find solutions to the problems.
Portions of his speech reads; “we are going to find those solutions together. In the past we tried to assist. We assisted to provide cars to some of you because some of you were using ‘trotro’ and other things to go around and so to protect your dignity, we asked the Ministry of Tourism to procure some cars and distribute to you and it was just the first phase and we were going to do it in phases.
“Unfortunately, we left office and that programme has not been continued and I also hear that some of the cars were seized from you and I think it’s unfortunate.”
The creative sector has the potential to boost economic development and it is seen in other developed countries. John Mahama also recognized the vision of the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
He added, the government should follow the footsteps of Kwame Nkrumah and put money into the sector to enhance its improvement.
“Nkrumah believed in creative arts and he put money in the creative arts and I believe that government must put money into the creative arts,” John Mahama added.
