The Movie Train (TMT) brings to you our top 3 2023 Nollywood movies that will entertain and give you the satisfaction you deserve.

Filmmaking in Nollywood has evolved. Gone are the days where Nollywood movies were only about witchcraft, religion, kingship, a journey to an evil forest to retrieve a substance that will unite two love birds.

The storytelling has changed, the cinematography as well as the directing style has also changed. A good movie leaves the audience wanting more. And that is exactly what the current movies released by Nollywood are achieving.

We should state that, our choice of the top 3 2023 movies doesn’t take into account every single movie in Nollywood this year. Our list is based on 2023 Nollywood movies that are available for streaming on Netflix.

Below are our top 3 2023 Nollywood movies currently streaming on Netflix.

3. The Black Book:

The Black Book follows the story of Paul Edima a deacon whose son has been framed for kidnapping and murdered. The aggrieved father after several attempts to get justice for his son through the system failed, had no other choice than to take matters into his own hands. Edima had to revisit a lifestyle he has buried for a very long time. With his past experience and training in the military, Edima goes all out to find and deal with the murders of his son.

The Black Book, as a movie touches on several themes that portray exactly what some people or better still powerless people go through in Nigeria. The movie deals with corruption among the police, the media, the political class as well as the greed that comes with it. The movie also touched on the level of injustice in the system, and the lack of interest in enforcing the laws of the land.

The movie featured prominent faces such as Richard Mofa-Damijo, Ade Laoye, Bimbo Akintola, Sam Dede, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, among others. The Black Book is directed by Editi Effiong.

2. Jagun Jagun:

Jagun Jagun (The Warrior) is another 2023 Nollywood movie that has been well received by film buffs and industry pundits.

The movie follows the story of a blood thirsty warrior Ogundiji (played by Femi Adebayo) who will do everything to keep his power and control over the people. Ogundiji wages war on innocent kingdoms and will not hesitate to eliminate anyone who stands in his way to get what he wants or defies his command. Kingdoms send their people to ‘The School of Warriors’ to be trained under the leadership of Ogundiji. These warriors are used by Ogundiji to perpetrate his evil acts against kingdoms. The show of African power, what people will call ‘juju’ is seen all over the movie. You can’t just succeed as a skilled warrior, you should also be fortified spiritually.

The cruelty of Ogundiji is aggravated when a warrior trainee Gbotija (played by Lateef Adedimeji) begins to gain some fame as he excels in his training. Jagun Jagun gives us the opportunity to see a different twist in filmmaking in Nigeria and for that matter Africa. The thrilling performances from the amazing cast makes the movie a delight to watch.

1. The House of Secrets

The movie that comes on top of our list is ‘The House of Secrets’ directed by Niyi Akinmolayan. Though the above movies are equally great, we had to settle on this movie on top of the list because of the storytelling and masterful directing style.

‘The House of Secrets’ follows the story of Sarah wonderfully played by Najite Dede and her patriotic military officer Panam played by Shawn Faqua. Panam was instantly blown away by the beauty and charm of Sarah who works at the post office. The two were sure their love for each other will last forever, until Panam chanced on a sensitive secret that will turn out to be the beginning of their problems.

Sarah has a top secret buried inside her head, and when this secret is made public, prominent people in public offices will be ruined. They must do everything to ensure that the secret remains buried. The directing coupled with the wonderful cinematography work makes the movie enjoyable and keeps you glued to your seat.

The House of Secrets features veteran actors such as Najite Dede, Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, Femi Jacobs, Shawn Faqua and a lot of other talented actors and actresses.
