The engagement report captures Netflix viewership from January to December 2023. According to the report, consumers watched a total of 183 billion hours in 2023. The watch hours are used to rank movies/series engagement on the platform.
The views are calculated as the total hours watched divided by the runtime. The title ranking of the contents are based on the total watch hours using the formula mentioned earlier.
Under the year in review, Netflix released 13 best performing African moves/series produced in Africa. The top 13 performing movies/series came from Nigeria and South Africa.
South African contents constitute 7 out of the 13, and the remaining 6 came from Nigeria.
At number one is the Nigerian movie “The Black book” which gathered 28.3 million views. The movie which was released in September 2023 featured top actors such as Sam Dede, Richard Mofe-Damijoe and others.
Two South African movies ‘Fatal Seduction’ and ‘Unseen’ occupied the second and third positions with 18.3 million and 18 million views respectively. According to the report, ‘Fatal Seduction’ is the only African title to hit triple-digit watch hours.
