Another judgment debt looming as government attempts to sign $800 million contract with parliamentary approval: John Jinapor

The government and the Ghana Gas Company are allegedly trying to sign a $800 million gas processing contract without getting parliamentary approval, according to the Minority in Parliament.

John Jinapor, the ranking member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, warned the Ghana Gas Company’s CEO against signing the contract since it could result in judgment debt.

“On behalf of the Minority, on behalf of the NDC, let me send a very firm and stern warning to the Chief Executive of Ghana Gas. Don’t allow politicians to use you for their selfish, parochial interests and gains. This contract has the tendency and high probability of causing serious judgment debt,” Jinapor cautioned.

John Jinapor stated that the government is resolved to employ all available tactics to force the CEO of the Ghana Gas Company to carry out the contract, given their realization that they would not win the elections in December.

“As we speak, the government of Ghana and Ghana Gas have not secured a firm commitment on the supply of raw gas for processing by this entity that they want to sign a contract with,” he added.

In addition, the Yapei Kusawgu MP stated that load shedding is still in effect and that GRIDCO has been warned not to notify customers.

Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the energy sector is collapsing and stated that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia led government intends to hand over a broken, dilapidated, and aging energy sector to the Mahama administration.

Mr. Jinapor charged the CEO of Ghana Gas to make available all the documents to Parliament, indicating he has the “express instruction from the Minority Leader to initiate processes to call for a full-scale parliamentary inquiry”.
