“Afro Nation has not been taken away from Ghana yet”: – Dr. Awal Mohammed

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Awal Mohammed has stated that “Afro Nation has not been taken away from Ghana.”

Dr. Awal stated that the event will still take place in Ghana in an interview with Joy FM at the editors’ forum that was hosted at the Accra City Hotel on Monday, August 14, 2023.

The Minister responded to recent rumors concerning Afro Nation’s future in Ghana, particularly in light of Nigeria’s intentions to organize its own version of the event.

The Minister said; “Afro Nation has not been taken away from Ghana. We even had a meeting last week. We discussed it. There are certain demands they want and we are trying to look at how to collaborate. It has not been taken yet. But we have alternatives.”

Responding to the future of Afro Nation in Ghana, the Minister noted that, Afro Nation will happen “Most likely. Very likely. This year, over the next three years.”

These declarations highlight government’s commitment to supporting a thriving cultural and entertainment scene.

In order to organize Afro Nation in Ghana, a five-year partnership between the Ghanaian government and Event Horizon Entertainment Limited was established. In the presence of the Ghana Tourism Authority and President Nana Akufo-Addo, the agreement was formally signed.

Last year the event thrilled patrons with performances from Camidoh, KiDi, Black Sherif, and Stonebwoy on the day 2. The previous night saw performances from Gyakie, Kuami Eugene, P-Square, Tiwa Savage, and CKay, South African amapiano star Kamo Mphela, and US rapper Meek Mill.

However, the event did not end as it was planned after an interruption on day 2 that brought the show to a halt. The development was attributed to safety concerns.

Therefore, artistes such as Asake and Rema as well as British-Nigerian rapper Skepta who were lined up to close the show did not get the opportunity to perform.
