The Electoral Commission has published the Ballot Statistics to guide the printing of ballot papers.

Prior to the 2024 General Election, the Electoral Commission has released the ballot statistics that will serve as a guide for printing the ballots for the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Commission stated that it added two percent to the total number of voters on the 2024 Provisional Voters Register (PVR) in order to arrive at the ballot statistics.

The Commission acknowledges that not every registered voter will cast a ballot in the general election of 2024, even as it welcomes and encourages a full turnout on election day.

The EC in a statement issued on Monday, October 14 said that it is “confident that the methodology relied upon, that is utilizing the total number of voters on the PVR plus a two percent increase to guide the printing of ballots, is adequate and will not result in shortfalls or unnecessary wastage. This methodology of adding a percentage increase has been used by the Commission to guide the printing of ballots since 1992. We entreat the Public to trust us to deliver on our mandate.”

Previously, the commission promised to give all printing houses, candidates, and political parties access to ballot statistics before the commencement of ballot paper printing.

The commission stated that it will not stray from this approach because it has been followed for many years.

According to the commission, it has seen certain remarks made in the open sphere claiming that the commission has not released voting data prior to the printing of ballots for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

“We would like to assure the General Public that printing of ballot papers has not commenced.Printing of Notices of Polls for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, however, begins on Friday, 11th October, 2024,” a statement issued by the commission said.

“As has always been the case, the Commission will provide ballot statistics to the Candidates / Political Parties and all Printing Houses before the printing of ballot papers starts.

“Printing of ballot papers will only commence after ballot statistics has been provided to all Stakeholders. The Commission will not depart from this practice. We urge the Public and all Stakeholders to trust the Electoral Commission to deliver a transparent, credible, free and fair elections in December 2024,” it said.
