Fear Women Review: a familiar theme with a spectacular twist.

After several publicity by Kobi Rana about the movie ‘Fear Women’, I decided to watch it to have a piece of first-hand information. Am I disappointed after watching the movie? The answer is No. though there are several moves with similar themes, the way ‘Fear Women’ was put together gives it that twist that will keep you glued to your seat.

Filmmaking in Ghana has declined drastically, and filmmakers are doing everything possible to get the industry back on its feet. That is why the contributions of Kobi Rana and other filmmakers should be commended and encouraged.

‘Fear Women’ is written and directed by Kobi Rana, having Kafui Danku as its executive producer. The movie takes us through the love story of Kelvin played by James Gardiner and Bella played by Salma Mumin. Watching ‘Fear Women’ brings to memory a similar story that broke out in Ghana about a famous footballer and his wife. The only difference is that ‘Fear Women’ is the writer’s imagination and not a true story.

The movie opens with Kelvin in a conversation with his therapist who has taken an interest in unearthing his love story. If there is anything such as ‘love at first sight’, then we have an explanation for how Kelvin met his wife, Bella. Though I would have wished part of the time used to depict the love journey of Kelvin and Bella be used to enhance other parts of the story, the director has a different view.

What started as a never-ending love story between Kelvin and Bella, turned out to have a rather chaotic ending. Fast forward, Kelvin will have to make a decision to save either his sister or his wife. His mother, played by the amazing Kalsoume Sinare, expected Kelvin to save his sister’s life by donating one of his kidneys to her. Eventually, we learned that, in Kelvin’s books, love is thicker than water as he chose to save his wife.

Though the script lacks depth, the amazing performances of the actors gave the movie a different touch. The thrilling performance by Kalsoume Sinare will leave goosebumps all over your skin. Not just in this movie, Kalsoume Sinare is a master when it comes to acting with passion, and she does it effortlessly. James Gardiner also gave a breathtaking performance by embodying his character to perfection. The other actors were also a delight to watch. It would have been an opportunity for Sandra Osei Nti to shine if she had more scenes.

Kobi Rana, the director of ‘Fear Women’, and the Cinematographer Evander Kwame Agyeman creatively planned the shots and camera movements to heighten the suspense. Apart from some instances of overexposure, the set design, lighting, blocking, and the entire atmosphere contributed to the magnificent look of the movie. Some hard cuts, both sound and visuals, could have been avoided if a little confidence had been exhibited at the editing bench.

A film is a whole universe on its own, hence it should be as real as possible. Remember, the various actors depict the real lives of the characters they represent. Characters wearing makeup and lip-gloss to bed don’t make the acting look and feel real. If it must be done, it must be done well no matter the budget limits.

Overall, ‘Fear Women’ is a movie worth your time. Support the film industry by watching the movies channeled out by Ghanaian filmmakers.
