“What we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg”: Dr. Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings on the destruction caused by galamsey.

Galamsey has pushed Ghana into a state of “chemical warfare on an unprecedented scale,” According to Dr. Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings.

In a LinkedIn post, the Klottey Korle lawmaker voiced her grave concerns about how galamsey is affecting Ghana’s public health, natural resources, and governance.

Dr. Zenator wrote; “I am haunted by the horrible images of the destruction to our water bodies and forests by galamsey. What we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg,”

“I am haunted by the horrible images of the destruction to our water bodies and forests by #Galamsey. What we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg. If the Ghana Standards Authority were to show us the levels and types of toxins in our water bodies both surface and underground (that includes borehole water!!), in our soil and in our food, we might appreciate the fact that what we are experiencing #Ghana is outright Chemical Warfare on an unprecedented scale. Horrifying for a country that is not at war, that is governed under rule of law and is supposed to be a stable and thriving democracy! It is shameful, actually.

Those persons behind Galamsey – especially those unseen faces at the top of the food chain- are in violation of the #humanrights of the people of Ghana and if we were to call a spade a spade, are as guilty as the person who puts poison in a glass of water and makes you to drink it. The exponential increase in kidney failure, cancers, infant mortality, birth defects and water shortages across the country are but a few of the direct consequences of this chemical warfare.

Are we waiting for famine in the midst of poisoned plenty before we realise the urgency with which we must address this? Or yet again, it’s only when certain person in society start dropping dead as a direct result of Galamsey that government will finally take action. And would it not be too little too late by then?

The Galamsey that’s feeding the insatiable greed of some people is being kept happily alive by corruption. So, once again #corruption and lack of accountability/consequences are threatening our very existence. Are we a failed state? Of what use are all the powers vested in the executive branch if not for a time such as this?

Of what use are the Security and Law Enforcement Agencies (which by the way, are under civilian control and under direct control of the Executive)? We cannot allow people to lose so much confidence in the State that we end up with a vacuum that breeds vigilantes who start to become crusaders for the protection of the environment and people.

This is a #NationalSecurity threat that has become a full blown crisis! It is time to act!!! And for goodness’ sake, this is not to be used as a populist propaganda campaign for votes. For once, the right thing must be done in the interest of the present and future of the people and country we love so much!!! #SaveGhana #stopgalamsey #InternationalHumanRights #Ghana 🇬🇭”
